Sedation Dentistry

A calmer way to receive dental care.

Dental anxiety is more common than most people realize. Some patients have had difficult experiences in the past. Others struggle with sensory sensitivities, a strong gag reflex, medical anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed during treatment.

At Zoe Dental, sedation dentistry is about support, not judgment. The goal is to help you feel calmer, more comfortable, and more in control of your care.

Sedation support is personal.

Some patients need support during longer procedures. Others feel anxious even during routine cleanings and exams. Sedation options are recommended thoughtfully based on your comfort level, medical history, treatment needs, and preferences.

Sedation may help with:

Dental Anxiety

Support for patients who feel nervous, overwhelmed, or fearful during dental visits.

Sensitive Gag Reflex

Additional comfort support for patients who struggle with gagging during treatment.

Sensory Sensitivities

A more thoughtful approach for patients who feel overstimulated by sounds, textures, lights, or sensations.

Longer or Complex Treatment

Sedation may help longer appointments feel more manageable and less stressful.

Difficulty Getting Numb

Some patients need additional support to feel fully comfortable during dental care.

Delayed Dental Care

For some patients, sedation helps make returning to the dentist feel possible again.

Sedation dentistry options

Sedation recommendations depend on the type of treatment, your health history, your anxiety level, and what helps you feel safe. Our team will walk through your options clearly so you know what to expect before anything begins.

Nitrous Oxide

This option is a light, calming sedation, administered by inhaling through a soft mask during your appointment. Most patients remain fully awake and can drive themselves home afterward. A good fit for mild anxiety, shorter appointments, or extra support during treatment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

A pill taken before your appointment to help you feel deeply relaxed during treatment. You’ll remain awake, though many patients remember very little afterward. Requires someone to drive you to and from your appointment and remain on site during your visit.

IV Sedation

Deeper sedation administered in-office by a partnering anesthesiologist. Often recommended for lengthy procedures, complex treatment, or patients who prefer to be minimally aware during care. Requires a driver and additional recovery time after treatment.

Feeling safe changes everything.

Many patients carry anxiety, embarrassment, or fear around dental care for years before asking for help. Some worry they will be judged for how long it has been. Others are afraid treatment will feel rushed or out of their control.

That is not the experience we want for you. Sedation dentistry is one way we help patients move forward with care in a way that feels calmer, clearer, and more manageable. Because at Zoe, there’s no shame, no pressure, and no “just getting through it.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use sedation dentistry for routine dental visits?

Yes. Sedation may be available for routine cleanings, exams, and preventive visits when anxiety, sensory sensitivities, gag reflex, or other concerns make dental care difficult.

Not always. Different sedation options create different levels of relaxation. Nitrous oxide helps patients feel calmer while remaining awake. Oral conscious sedation creates a deeper sense of relaxation, but many patients are still responsive during care.

No. Sedation can also help patients with strong gag reflexes, sensory sensitivities, difficulty getting numb, longer appointments, or complex treatment needs.

Sedation recommendations are based on your health history, medications, treatment needs, and comfort level. Before recommending sedation, our team will review your medical history and explain what to expect.

Sedation helps reduce anxiety and improve comfort, but local anesthetic is still typically used to numb the treatment area. The goal is to help the appointment feel calmer and more manageable.

Yes. Many patients who have delayed care find that sedation helps them feel more comfortable returning. You will not be judged for how long it has been.

For nitrous oxide, many patients can drive themselves after the appointment. For oral conscious sedation or IV sedation with the anesthesiologist, you will need someone to bring you to and from your visit. Our team will give you clear instructions before your appointment.

There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Needing support does not make you difficult. It makes you human. Our goal is to help you receive care in a way that feels safe, respectful, and manageable.
