Post-Op Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I keep gauze in after an extraction?
Keep gentle pressure on the gauze for about 45 minutes to 1 hour after your procedure, or as directed by your care team. Replace gauze as needed if bleeding continues.
Why can’t I use a straw after an extraction?
The suction from a straw can disturb the blood clot that forms in the extraction site. That clot is important for healing and helps reduce the risk of dry socket.
When can I rinse with salt water?
Most patients can begin gentle warm saltwater rinses after 24 to 48 hours. If a bone graft was placed, avoid vigorous rinsing for at least 1 week unless your care team tells you otherwise.
What should I eat after dental surgery?
Stick with soft foods for the first 24 to 48 hours. Good options include soup, mashed potatoes, yogurt, applesauce, scrambled eggs, and soft pasta.
What drinks should I avoid after surgery?
Avoid alcohol, carbonated drinks, and acidic drinks like orange juice, apple juice, lemonade, or soda during the early healing period.
Can I brush my teeth after an extraction?
Yes, you can brush your teeth as normal, but be careful around the extraction site. Do not use mouth rinse until the area has healed unless your care team gives you different instructions.
Is bleeding normal after a bone graft or implant procedure?
Yes, some bleeding from the surgical site can be normal for 24 to 48 hours. If bleeding continues, place the gauze we provided over the area and apply gentle pressure for about 30 minutes, or until the bleeding slows.
What should I avoid after a bone graft or implant procedure?
Avoid touching the surgical site with your tongue or fingers. Do not smoke or use tobacco products for at least 72 hours. Avoid drinking through a straw for 2 to 3 days, rinsing or swishing for about 48 hours, and vigorous exercise for 3 to 4 days.
When can I rinse after a bone graft?
After 48 hours, we recommend gently rinsing with warm salt water twice a day. If a bone graft was placed, do not rinse vigorously for at least one week.
What if I had a sinus lift?
If a sinus lift was performed, avoid sneezing or blowing your nose for one month. If you feel the urge to sneeze, sneeze with your mouth open. When lying down, elevate your head with 2 to 3 pillows.
How much swelling is normal after bone graft or implant surgery?
Swelling is normal and usually reaches its peak 2 to 3 days after surgery. To help minimize swelling, use a cold pack on the cheek near the surgical site for about 20 minutes on and off during the first 24 hours.
What should I eat after a bone graft or implant procedure?
Eat a soft diet for at least 48 hours. Avoid foods that are hard, sticky, or spicy. Good options include scrambled eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, pasta, and mashed potatoes. Do not skip meals. Keeping nutrition in your body supports healing.
When can I return to my normal oral hygiene routine?
After 2 to 3 days, you can begin returning to your normal oral hygiene routine. Brush within the limits of your comfort and be gentle around the surgical area. Keeping the area clean is important for healing.
Will I need a follow-up appointment?
Yes. Your doctors will see you for a follow-up appointment to evaluate how you are healing and remove sutures if needed.
